HISTORY
The Forbes clan, one of the most powerful and influential of the northern clans, was founded in 1168 by the Celt Ochonochar. Ochonochar slew the bears that had made the area uninhabitable and won the Braes of Forbes in Aberdeenshire. Duncan de Forbes, the chief in 1271, obtained a charter from Alexander III for the land confirming his claim. The Forbes are famous for building and owning many beautiful castles, Craigievar in Aberdeenshire one of the most famous. The family had at one time 150 great houses and estates in Aberdeenshire and Banffshire. The clan seat, Castle Forbes, built in 1815, stands on the land claimed by Oconachar overlooking the river Don and the famous hill Bennachie.
Throughout history to present date, this ancient clan continues a wide number of highly distinguished members in many spheres of public life.
The Forbes Ancient tartan contains a rich deep mix of green and blue with black and white stripes.
